BILL BRANDT          Picture Post 1946 - The Doomed East End

Bill Brandt documents the diverse lives of the population of Stepney and Poplar in the East End of London. The cover features a regular of the Railway Tavern, known locally as Charlie Brown's, on the West India Dock Road. The story was in response to London County Council's plans to redevelop a large area of the East End, which had been so badly damaged during the Blitz.
Brandt's portraits reveal an affinity and sensitivity to his subject, which had not been as apparent in some of his earlier work for Picture Post.
