Cartier Bresson left China in Sepetmeber 1949 as the new Communist regime took power. He returned in June 1958 and travelled over 7000 miles to observe the changes within the country. He documented the ceremonies to celebrate the completion of the Ming Tomb Dam, and photographed the 9th Annivesary parades celebrating the birth of the People's Republic of China.
Life published 30 of HCB's photographs including the cover.
