HENRI CARTIER BRESSON           At Last Look at Peiping - Life 1949

In December 1949 Henri Cartier Bresson travels to Peking to document the last days of the city before the Communists take over.
He records life in and around the 'Forbidden City', an ancient culture that appeared unchanged for centuries.
IHCB described what he saw;

"Looking at these gentlemen in long robes, I feel that they will hear that the war is over a long time after it has ended. The course of history does not seem to interrupt a way of life."

Life published the photo-essay, including 26 of HCB's photographs.
