LEONARD McCOMBE Picture Post September 9th 1944 - Road to victory
'Leonard McCombe is better known for his postwar career as a Life magazine staff photographer. His exceptional wartime career at Picture Post has been less well documented.
In this photo essay McCombe follows the fighting in Normandy as British and Canadian forces, after the capture of Caen, push to close the Falaise gap and
thereby deny the Wehrmacht an escape route into Western France.
His closeness to the fighting and his intimate portraits of the soldier in combat rate as some of the the most exceptional photographs of the war.
