W EUGENE SMITH                                          Camera On A Carrier 1943

In November 1943, while on assignment for Ziff Davis, Smith joined the crew of the aircraft carrier U.S.S Bunker Hill. He documented life on board the ship's maiden voyage. The carrier was very soon in action at Rabaul, where it was narrowly missed by two bombs. Smith flew on several sorties, including the pre-invasion attacks on Tarawa, when he landed on the island to record the aftermath. Further actions included Truk and Kwajalein, and Smith returned to the United States in March 1944.
Popular Photography publishes 12 pages of his images.
The magazine has a tape repair to the spine.
