WALKER EVANS                        Fortune - September 1950 - Along The Right-Of-Way

Walker Evans was the staff photographer at Fortune from 1945. He was able to indulge his vision and passions through portfolios of images such as this, "Along The Right-Of-Way". His vision of American vernacular is now seen in a series of fleeting glimpses from the window of a train. This strict departure from his large-format work of the 1930's to a more flexible view in the 50's allows the images to be read less as a photo essay and more as a visual stream of consiousness. It also provides a fascinating insight into Evans' influence and friensdship with Robert Frank.
