WEEGEE           Illustrated November 24th 1945 - Naked City

SOLD

Arthur Felig (1899-1968), better known as Weegee, published his 'noir' vision of New York, Naked City, in 1945. Weegee dismissed the publisher's idea of a launch cocktail party, holding it in Sammy's Saloon in the Bowery, whose clientele had featured in many of Weegee's photographs.

Due to the success of the book Weegee received a major retrospective at the MOMA.  In his own words; "I was an overnight sensation.  Success went to my head and camera.  My prices went up from five dollars a shot to five hundred."

The British magazine Illustrated carried a three page review of the book in November '45.
