Back to Robert Capa INDEX

On the 2nd October 1943 Capa encountered the funeral of twenty schoolboys from the Vomero district who led by their teacher fought the Germans for four days prior to the entry of the Allies. Capa described the scene; "I pointed the lens at the faces of the prostrated women, taking little pictures of their dead babies, until finally the coffins were taken away. They were the truest pictures of victory, the ones I took at the simple school house funeral."

The photographs of the young partisans were taken by Sandro Auriscchio De Val.
