George Rodger Flying Tigers in Burma Life 30th March 1942
George Rodger documented the men of the American Volunteer Group (AVG) nicknamed the "Flying Tigers" at their base at Mingladon airfield outside Rangoon, Burma. The pilots, equipped with the famous shark nosed P-40 Warhawks, fought alongside the RAF in the desperate defence of Burma. Although considerably outnumbered, they achieved notable successes against the Japanese. The unit was disbanded on the 4th July 1942. The pilots then formed the nucleus of the 23rd Fighter Group, retaining the nickname and the markings as part of the 14th Airforce.
