Henri Cartier Bresson The looting of Nanking Life 1949

In April 1949 Henri Cartier Bresson travelled by train to Nanking to document the city under imminent threat from Communist attack. The Kuomintang nationalist government retreated to the South, leaving Nanking empty, and HCB photographed the aftermath as looters ransacked the city.
