Robert Capa Battle for Troina Sicily Life 30th August 1943

Capa documented the battle for the strategic hill top town of Troina which blocked the route to Messina. The week long battle began on July 31st 1943 as the Germans fought a desperate rearguard action allowing the majority of their men and equipment to escape to Italy. Capa entered Troina with one of the first US patrols on August 6th.
